Tips for Traveling with Invisalign

A luggage bag with stickers on itWhether it’s a vacation or business trip, traveling while undergoing Invisalign treatment in Toronto requires some planning ahead. If you’ll be taking a trip while improving your smile with Invisalign, we’ve got a few tips to keep in mind when planning your excursion.

Tell Your Orthodontist About Your Travel Plans

When you’re wearing Invisalign, you must change your aligners every two weeks. If you know that your “change” day will happen while you’re away, you’ll need to have your next set of aligners with you. If you don’t have the aligners already, ask your Toronto orthodontists Dr. Kimos or Dr. Dayan to give them to you before you head out of town.

Take Along Your Previous Set of Aligners

If you happen to lose or break an aligner before it’s time to move onto the next aligner, you will need to wear the previous aligner until your orthodontist can order you a replacement. In case this happens, bring your last set of aligners along with you just to be safe.

Carry an Invisalign Kit

It’s a good idea to fill a small zippered pouch or plastic container with all your Invisalign supplies like the previous and next set of aligners, your toothbrush, toothpaste & floss, and whatever aligner cleaning supplies you use.  If you have your past and future Invisalign aligners in the same pouch, make sure to label them or place one in a smaller baggie so you don’t forget which is which. If you’re flying, pack the kit in your carry-on luggage in case your checked-in luggage is delayed or lost.

Be Mindful of the 22 Hour Wear Time

When you’re traveling, it’s easy to forget to keep your aligners in when trying out new foods and drinks and going on adventures like scuba diving where you may not be able to wear the aligners. Even though you’ll be busy, it’s essential that you wear your aligners for at least 22 hours every day to keep your treatment on track.

If You Can’t Brush, Rinse Your Mouth Out with Water

For those times when it’s not convenient or even possible to brush your teeth when traveling, be sure to at least rinse your mouth out with water before putting your aligners back in. Then brush your teeth later, as soon as you have time. This will prevent bacteria from getting trapped between your aligners and teeth and help with keeping your breath fresh.

Health Benefits of Straight Teeth

As your trusted orthodontist, we understand the benefits of having straight teeth. That’s why we at City Orthodontics strive to be on the cutting-edge of orthodontic treatment for all those in and around Toronto, ON. Whether you decide to use clear braces, Invisalign, or another orthodontic treatment, our procedures will allow you to gain all the benefits of having a perfect smile. Here are a few reasons why it’s more beneficial to have straight teeth.

It Makes Your Teeth Easier to Clean

When your teeth are crowded or otherwise crooked, food is more likely to get trapped between them. Also, flossing and regular brushing to maintain good oral hygiene will be more effective when your teeth are straighter. The added benefit of undergoing treatment with Invisalign is that you can continue to brush your teeth just like normal; you just remove your aligners when it’s time to brush or floss.

It Will Make Your Teeth and Gums Healthier

Since food tends to get trapped in crooked teeth a lot more often, this will lead to gum disease and tooth decay much faster. Crowded teeth can also cause red and swollen gums. Orthodontic treatment will allow your teeth to shift into a more favorable alignment, allowing the gums to fit more securely around the teeth, lessen the food that gets trapped in them, and improve their health.

It Improves Your Overall Health Too

Unhealthy teeth can lead to gum disease and tooth decay. When left untreated, bacteria can cause other oral problems as well. This doesn’t just stop there either. This can also lead to even more serious risks such as heart disease, diabetes, and strokes.

It Can Boost Your Self Esteem

Orthodontic treatment can be used to boost one’s confidence as well. A lot of people with crooked teeth tend to hide their smiles and keep themselves from laughing around others because they don’t want their teeth to be seen. With the usage of an orthodontic treatment such as Invisalign, a person can feel more comfortable smiling, laughing, and just acting like his or her true self. This can allow someone to achieve more confidence in social or professional settings.

5 Best Reasons To See Your Orthodontist Before Vacation

There are so many great things about summertime in Toronto. The city offers amazing picnic spots from under the cherry blossoms at High Park to along the shores of Lake Ontario at Bluffer’s Park. Families flock to the two zoos, museums, outdoor concerts and movies in the park. And families travel to surrounding cities and countries while the kids are out of school. Probably the very last thing you’re thinking about is a trip to the orthodontist. However, whether you’re “staycationing” or vacationing, we encourage you to see your City Orthodontist before you travel.

Reason #1: A Check-Up For Your Braces

When you’re on vacation, the last thing you want to think about or worry about is your braces or Invsalign aligners. If you’re already receiving treatment from City Ortho, make that appointment a week or so before you take off for vacation. This will give our friendly experts a chance to make sure your brackets and wires are secure and you have your next set of aligners ready to go. And, if your appointment is time for a treatment, you’ll have a few days to adjust to the new tightness before you travel.

Reason #2: New Orthodontic Treatment Needs Time

If you or your child are ready for orthodontic treatment, summertime is the perfect time to get started. Your first visit will take some time for us to explain about treatment and financing options. Sometimes it takes some time to adjust to speaking, eating, and normal life in general when you have new braces or aligners in your mouth. Getting started in the summer will give you that time. By the time school starts, you’ll be used to the new “you” and confident and ready to show your friends at school.

Reason #3: Kids Won’t Miss School

If you’ve worried about your child missing school for orthodontic appointments, you’ll want to get as many appointments in during the summer as you can. City Ortho knows how important it is for your child to be in school learning and will work with you to get your appointments in as quickly as possible during the summer months.

Reason #4: Easier To Get An Appointment

Because kids aren’t in school, parents are scheduling appointments during the daytime, leaving many more total appointments available. We’ll do our best to fit you in before you leave for summer vacation at your convenience. And, if you’re just starting treatment or ready for your initial consultation, we’ll have more spots that will work with your schedule.

Reason #5: Don’t Let Your Braces Vacation

You should see City Orthodontist before your summer vacation so that our doctors can remind you to not let your orthodontic treatment take a vacation when you do. It’s so important that you continue your treatment while you’re taking a break. Whether it’s avoiding foods that will damage your braces, remembering to wear your retainer, or keeping those aligners in for the prescribed amount of time, you’ll not want to interrupt your great progress toward that beautiful smile.

Call Your Toronto Orthodontist For An Appointment

Now that you’re convinced to get in and see your orthodontist before summer vacation, don’t wait to get that exam or consultation scheduled.
